Who to Bench 17/18

Post by Curwinkle »

Most of us are still tinkering. Those who are settled do you have any conundrums?

I have Carroll and Ayew, both of Swansea vying for my 5th mid in a 3-5-2 or 3rd forward in a 3-4-3.

Currently leaning towards Carroll but a bit of a toss up.

I'd bench Ayew; I think Carroll is more likely to start and seems to be on a few set pieces with Siggy out. However asking the question does bring us into a different question of the point of having Ayew at all...Can you downgrade him and upgrade the defence maybe?

Hasn't Ayew been playing up top with Abrahams?

I haven't followed Swans at all preseason as I dislike their first 3 fixtures. If that is true and consensus is Ayew is extremely likely to start, then I'd play him.

Bailly, Yoshida, Naughton, Mee, Rangel

This is what I had settled on for GW1, but it would mean playing Yoshida and Naughton, who are playing against each other on the opening day. So not ideal obviously, which is why it may be better to go for Hegazi who has a nice run of fixtures to open the season with. That would mean a WBA double up with Foster admittedly, but I can't see any other 4.5 defender with good opening fixtures. Anyone else going for a Swans defender? Their opening fixtures aren't that great :| Mee has a decent home fixture in 2,4 & 6

Yes he has, however he has been the player who has been dropping back into the midfield to provide support, while Abrahams has been going side to side to collect the ball.
Swansea have been playing wide, so it sets up well for Abrahams, with Carroll and Fer providing the majority of the link play.

I've the same pairing and think I'm going to stick with Foster off the back of their clean sheet this week against a side I feel is more dangerous than Burnley

Although I thought we (Newcastle) defended really well even with the 2 back four substitutions. Elliot pulled off some good saves. It was only when we went down to 10 we were stretched.

Same here. Tough call with both being away to teams who scored three goals on the opening day.

I also have Mee (WBA) vs Hegazi (bur) to make a decision on.

I have the same two but I'm currently sitting with Elliot in starting 11. I think I'm correct that Newcastle got more clean sheets away from home last season. Newcastle, now needing their first points of the season, will believe they can do a job away at Huddersfield, where they won in March.

Just checked on Sky Bet and the odds of a clean sheet slightly favour Foster. West Brom are 15/8 for a shut out and Newcastle 9/4.

Gut feeling is Elliot though as I can see Rafa going defensive in away games, even against Huddersfield. Burnley vs Brom could go either way but the Clarets will be full of confidence and were strong at home last year.

A tough one this. Got Elliot in at the moment but may well swap before the weekend.

Pick 3 from Matic, Atsu, Palmer and Carroll.

TAA will be in the squad, to join the other top 6 Defenders. (I suppose the first sub spot will be relevant in case Klippity rests him  )

Need to bench 1 out of Mee, Atsu and JRod. If I play Mee I guess it makes sense to bench JRod although doesn't feel right

If it were me, I'd bench RLC.

Tough call but Carroll's set piece duties edge it for me.

Who would you bench out of Foster (Burnley away) and Elliot (Huddersfield away)?
Out of Mee (WBA home) and Daniels (Watford home)?

I'm playing Foster over Elliot, Newcastle look atrocious at the moment.

I'd also play Daniels over Mee purely for attacking returns.

If we kept 11 men on the field I believe we would've had a CS against Spurs.

My exact two dilemmas. I'm thinking Foster based on the cleansheet last week and Daniels too for the attacking potential.

Solve my dilemma and bench one: Kolasinac, Mee, Ndidi.

I'd bench Ndidi. Wba v Burnley will probably be a 0-0 draw.
