Milner is a defender

Post by Skrtel »

That's make him an fpl dream, right? Any suggestions? To expensive? Is there any better choices for premium defenders?

Well, he's not super cheap, but first things first, if he'd played last season as a defender, how many points would he have got? And if he plays at left back this year, do you expect a similar performance?

I suspect his minutes could be limited, barring transfer activity of cource. Pretty sure Liverpool is in the market for a new LB, Robertson pops up here and there. Not sure if thats a direct improvement so i expect some rotation for that spot.

If a better LB emerges i'm positive he's due to some rotation in midfield with Hendo, Wiji, Can, Lallana and perhaps Coutinho in a deeper role. The youngsters in Grujic and Stewart and perhaps others if they have a impressive pre-season can also take some minutes away from him. 6.5 seems a bit steep in my view.

182. That doesn't take into account the probable extra bonus points he would have got from clean sheets, which is a pretty great return for a 6.5m player.
He scored 7 goals (all pens) last year, that's definitely on the high side so we can probably expect a couple less goals. I'd say he's a safe bet for 150+ points if Liverpool doesn't get another left back

I guess it's the seven pens that is the issue, I mean maybe a truly attacking wingback is better, perhaps azpil if he ends up playing on the right for instance.

Alonso is only 0.5 more, I kind of feel that I'd prefer him of the two.

Seven pens seems like unsustainable, but I think Liverpool is expected to play in the box so maybe they are able to get about seven penalties again?

I think Milner is able to improve his goalscoring from open play (well, that should be easy regarding his 0 goals last season) and Liverpool are able to keep more clean sheets, so that's how Milner can still get more points.

It's true Alonso is more attacking from open play (by far actually) but I kind of prefer Milner, especially with 0.5m less - maybe that's just because I love having players who are on penalties  But then again who doesn't!

I think what was special about Alonso's attacking stats was his shots on target per minute, it was ahead of everyone but some distance with PvA as the only company really.

PVA actually is worth thinking about, I was really hoping for a 5.0 valuation but they've priced him as a wing-back I think.

Yes, he would, in other words, have been the game's top-scoring defender last season, if classified as such.

Milner's been in all my drafts so far, and if he looks like holding onto his left-back spot then I think he'll be a set-and-forget for the season. Is 7 penalties really that high for a team that play a gung-ho high-pressing attacking system like Liverpool? They won a load of penalties in 13/14 when they had pacey tricksters like Sterling, Sturridge and Suárez bamboozling defences. I can see them winning a similarly high number of penalties again this season with the likes of Mané and Salah doing the bamboozling.

If he plays every game (or as many minutes as he did last season) then I can see Milner ending up with 170-180 points.

This year's Alonso, in other words.

I think this to, and with Salah's added speed and dribbling ability I think we can expect a good amount of penalties. Also, if Liverpool will get their transfer target VVD, the defence might be boosted with good possibilities for some cs's.

Does put a question mark on milners playing time

Liverpool widely reported as in the market for a left back. Does that not rule Milner out as an option until the window shuts?

If he is certain to be the left back then he'll be in my team all season I imagine.

What a pity it would be if that turns out to be the case.

Looks like FPL might have reclassified him a year too late! :D

Looks like Liverpool are close to signing Andy Robertson, reportedly for £8m. If done, I can't see Milner getting the minutes needed to justify that price. Klopp was heavily rotating in 2015/16 when they launched their unsuccessful bid for the UEFA cup.

Robertson for 8m (and Solanke for free) seems very reasonable in a world where decent right-backs cost £53m. Good for Klopp if he refuses to be bullied into paying crazy money for players with one or two good seasons behind them. Although Liverpool's squad looks a bit thin to me if they want to have an impact in both PL and CL.

Amazing value for a decent squad player. Pretty sure Milner has been good enough to stay there though...

Which opens up another question - if Robertson takes the left-back spot away from Milner, then who will be on penalties for Liverpool?

Robertson will going straight into the first team when fit Milner is out imo

Of more interest is Klopp happy to sell Clyne who is also injured, looks like Alexander Arnold has a sniff at a starting place

Milner was arguably Liverpool's best defender last year. Will take a lot for Robertson to displace him. Would be shocked if Milner isn't starting week 1.

My thoughts are that Miller was asked to play LB due to a lack of options. He played very well. I'm wondering if Robertson is only being signed as a back up to Milner for injury/rest purposes (and Milner doesn't need a lot of rest). Man City FB £53m Liverpool FB £8m ?? Being their best penalty taker (and creating the most chances for a Def last year) must also make him a bit harder to drop.

Also he is vice captain. I think Klopp appreciates Milner a lot. He played to much last season and Robertson might just be rotation and a long term solution. I think Milner will be first choice, BUT, of course he's playing time will decrease if Robertson arrives.

Why would Klopp sign a specialist left back to play second fiddle to one that isn't on a year he's made it into the champions league? Lots of wishful thinking but who knows

Milner will almost certainly be starting the season at left back. Klopp likes Milner in the side. There's also a chance, I suppose, slim as it may be, that Milner could play right back with Clyne missing out and Robertson playing LB. I'll be very surprised if Milner isn't first choice at the start

Robertson costs about 8 million, not 80 million, it's not like he is a certain star player.

No chance will Milner play rb they have a superb young kid Alexander Arnold who is bursting to supplant Clyne, who Klopp allegedly is happy to sell.

I'm not sure Alexander-Arnold would be ready for a long run at right back in the first team but he does look promising. Who knows. Regardless, Milner will be playing at left back at the start of the season.
