Re: £4.0m/£4.5m defensive gems - 2017/18
Cuco Martina now avaliable at 4.5 for Everton, surely a bargain if he's to start at right back in Coleman's abscense ?
Although rumblings it could still be Holgate/Kenny, so maybe give it a few games weeks to wait and see, given the fixtures

Yedlin's prospects at Newcastle have just gone up. It turns out the new RB we're getting is Manquillo - the same one who couldn't get in the Sunderland team last season ahead of Billy Jones.
Three who can play RB signed in 12 months now (squad player Gamez the third), two of them are Athletico rejects and two were previously on loan with the Mackems!

Meanwhile, here's Rafa on the prospects of 4.0 Elliot being first choice:
“The main thing for Rob Elliot is to be fit and he’s training hard after playing the final three games of last season.
“He is a good goalkeeper but I want him to compete.
“You can’t have players that think this is easy because they are the only one in that position.
“Hopefully we can bring in a new goalkeeper, and this competition will be good for the team.”
Krul wasn't in the preseason squad and is expected to be sold. Darlow will be in the mix.

Are the rumours of Darlow moving definitely dead in the water now then?Stemania wrote:Meanwhile, here's Rafa on the prospects of 4.0 Elliot being first choice:

He's been linked with Boro but it would be surprising. Rafa likes to have 3 GKs. Sels was also with us last season but didn't play (and has now gone on loan). Woodman I expect to go on loan leaving Elliot, Darlow and a new GK as the intended 3 I think.

This Mee fellow at Burnley must surely be the best option at 4,5?

Re: £4.0m/£4.5m defensive gems - 2017/18
I think when you consider 4.5 defenders then usually there isn't a best "one" as it's more about picking a unit and squeezing rotation out of them.Panserjohan wrote:This Mee fellow at Burnley must surely be the best option at 4,5?
The best 4.5 defender last year was McAuley with 130 (including a ridiculous 6 goals) after that I think it's around 110 for the best of them individually. The idea of course is to rotate and boost their points, but the best 5.0 (effectively the same price as two 4.5s) needs to be carefully considered.
I think a back 4 suits the defenders this year, a couple of premiums, a 5.0 and then a couple of 4.5s with effectively a 2-from-3 rotation going on, with perhaps a little input from midfield. That's a break from the 3x4.5 solutions of past years but does mean that we only need a couple of 4.5 defenders.

I have gone for Mee, along with Fernandez and Francis as my 4.5 defenders. Mee was solid last season, don't think he missed a game? Just what you want!Panserjohan wrote:This Mee fellow at Burnley must surely be the best option at 4,5?

I've gone for Yedelin from Newcastle and would likely have gone for another Newcastle defender had I not picked Ritchie and Gayle.
My other cheap defender is Rangel, though i suspect he's not going to play, so I might swap him out for another cheap defender.

Re: £4.0m/£4.5m defensive gems - 2017/18
Bearing in mind we only have to get up to the first wildcard (assuming its inevitability), there does look like there might be one or two good 1-from-2 rotations for 4.5m defenders that may work well in that formation in the short term. Sure, in a 433 I think you're probably asking them to also cover a game or two from a Cedric-type 3rd defender (so effectively a 2-from-3), but even so - the Palace/Burnley combo has quite good opening 6 games for example:Mav3rick wrote: I think a back 4 suits the defenders this year, a couple of premiums, a 5.0 and then a couple of 4.5s with effectively a 2-from-3 rotation going on, with perhaps a little input from midfield. That's assuming Palace have a pickable 4.5m come GW1 (Tomkins?).

That would be great wouldn't it? I'd love to work out a Palace/Burnley rotation for 9.0m. In their first friendly, de Boer lined up a 3-4-3 so that's one thing to keep an eye on. Schlupp (5.0m) played LWBStemania wrote: That's assuming Palace have a pickable 4.5m come GW1 (Tomkins?).

Could be.vendzol wrote: Delaney?
If it's 343 there's a great chance they'll be one - Ward 5, Dann 5 & Delaney 4.5 played as the three in the first friendly (Tomkins wasn't in squad so presumably is still injured?) and Ward could easily move to RWB. In 433 I one of Delaney/Tomkins looks like they currently play, but we'd be expecting them to buy someone new to replace the departed Sakho(?).

Worth noting Joe Hart (on loan to West Ham) has been added at £4.5m.
If you have any faith in the West Ham defence, or indeed Joe himself, that could be a reasonable value pick. Surely he hasn't gone there to be a squad player.

Mawson is firmly in my draft - just mentioned in the 4.5 defender rotation thread - but 5.0 is too expensive for discussion in either threadBilly Bongo wrote:Mawson and Maguire are beast not seeing them in any drafts

Yeesh is it tougher this year to find good 4.5m options? Last year I remember we had nailed on options at teams like Bournemouth, West Brom and Stoke. This year it looks tough to find nailed on 4.5m starters with ok fixtures. If the Palace backline looks settled I'll probably go for someone to rotate with Mee in my third defender slot. Plus a 4m on the bench.

Living in the area (and being a Leeds fan myself) I am being constantly told by Burnley fans that he can expect 30+ games this season.From4corners wrote: ↑24 Jul 2017, 21:12 Is Charlie Taylor at Burnley expected to start?

Having watched him for the last three years, I can vouch for his ability, he'll not be phased by the top division and I'd expect at least half a dozen assists this year, if not more.

Half a dozen assists "at least"??? For a team as goal-shy as Burnley, 6+ assists from one of their full-backs would be some achievement.
To put that in context, marauding left-wing points merchant Marcos Alonso only recorded 5 assists last season for Chelsea, the same amount as Leighton Baines, Hector Bellerín and Ryan Bertrand. Seamus Coleman and James Milner recorded 4 assists each, Antonio Valencia 3.

Re: £4.0m/£4.5m defensive gems - 2017/18
The record in recent seasons was Janmaat for Newcastle a few seasons back, he had 8 assists. That's around 0.6 points per game, it's not huge. The only defender I think might get near that this season is Trippier. Maybe Bellerin if Wenger plays him every week I suppose.
At 6 points/goal and 3 points/assist it's the goalscoring defenders you want really. Or someone like Alonso who has both in his repertoire.
