The Curious Case of....[Allan-Romeo Nyom]

Post by Hotstepper »

... Allan-Romeo Nyom.

Benched for today's home game vs Hull. Was substituted on at 30mins, after Hull had taken a 1-0 lead. West Brom then conceded no more goals, and at full time Nyom had completed 60mins, and bagged the clean sheet points. He also then claimed 2 bonus points, probably as the only player in the game with a clean sheet in the game.

ALLAN Nyom will report to Cameroon this week to discuss his role in his nation's Africa Cup of Nations campaign this month. Nyom will miss the FA Cup tie against Derby but his future absence will depend upon talks with the Cameroon FA, the Albion defender having indicated he would prefer to stay with his Club.
What a bizarre situation.

Yet Friend came on at 33 probably played more than 60 mins when you consider the injury time and got nothing

He appears to have become somewhat of a bonus magnet lately, picking up bonus points in 4 of the last 9 games. West Brom haven't been keeping clean sheets, so it must be his style of play.

Not dissimilar to Agüero today or Giroud bagging three bonii vs Sunderland but just seems stranger because he's a defender. All of these cases definitely highlight a potential issue with the bonus point criteria in relation to subs who may not have influenced the game as the raw stats suggest but I will always favour a transparent and consistent points system over one person randomly choosing who gets bonus. Unless that person is me...

Surely a defender playing the last 60 minutes and keeping a clean sheet plus bonus is no different to a defender playing the first 60 minutes and keeping a clean sheet plus bonus? It's a non-issue imo.

It's unusual because a sub before 30 mins for any reason is unusual.

Unfair? No, I don't think so.

I saw a game the other day when Watford made two subs in the first 15 minutes or so, injuries happen all the time so early subs aren't exactly a rare occurrence. They even can happen for tactical reasons sometimes as well.

The latest update -
ALLAN Nyom is unavailable for selection in today’s Premier League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur as the club await international clearance from Cameroonian Football Federation. The Albion defender has been at the centre of a dispute between the club and Cameroon following his non-selection for the Africa Cup of Nations. The Baggies have made strenuous efforts all week to clarify Nyom’s eligibility to play at White Hart Lane.

Director of Football Administration Richard Garlick confirmed that Nyom will miss his second game of January but was hopeful the dispute will be resolved soon. He said: “Unfortunately Cameroon have not given us clearance for Allan to play at Spurs but FIFA will meet to discuss his availability early next week, after which we hope for as speedy a resolution as possible. “It is our position that Allan should be available for club football during the championships.”
Hopefully back next week at home to Sunderland.

BBC report on Matip not being able to play for Liverpool until Cameroon are done at ACON, so one would presume the same restriction applies to Nyom ? Potentially meaning he will miss the next 3 Prem games and will not be available again until Feb 11th away to West Ham.

West Brom said this -
The Baggies cannot be sure Allan Nyom will be available with the subject of his international clearance now in the hands of FIFA. The club confirmed that the Cameroonian Football Federation have now the lodged the issue at FIFA and Baggies officials will be pressing for as swift a resolution as possible.
I guess it's a wait and see from FIFA.

Klopp said in his Plymouth presser that FIFA will make a decision on Matip on Friday, so presumably West Brom will get an answer about Nyom on Friday too.

Not quite - they said they will decide whether they need to decide  Load of crap if you ask me, legal restraint of trade of a player who has formally retired from international football.

“The thing is that FIFA told us that on Friday, this Friday, they will decide if they open a case about it or not.... and if FIFA opens a case then .... it would be, they already told us, between seven and 10 days until we get a decision."

He has always said he wouldn't go to the tournament but I'm not sure whether/when he had formally announced his retirement.

Matip or Nyom?

Nyom certainly flew out for talks and flew back.

Where are FIFA with this Friday decision?

No news is bad news, but would at least like some conformation before I sell.

He had a red flag put on him on 14th, which changed to yellow the same day. I believe that means no price protection, but even if he did have it his 8 days would be up now anyway.

The yellow flag is a bit of a ridiculousness - it should have been red or nothing imo - but it's another case of the use of the 75% flag as some sort of advisory notice.
