New Zealand might have a great rugby team. But their football team is awful

Euro U21 2017

As thigs stand 15' to go

ITA 1-0 GER
CZE 2-2 DEN

ITA 1st, GER 2nd and qualified on GD +4

SF
ENG-GER
SPA-ITA

IF ITA score 2-0, GER eliminated on goals scored
ENG-ITA
SPA-SVK

IF GER equalise 1-1, Cze 2nd but eliminated
ENG-GER
SPA-SVK

IF CZE score to win 3-2, GER 1st on tied teams GD, Cze 2nd but eliminated
ENG-GER
SPA-SVK

IF CZE score to win 3-2 AND ITA score 2-0, CZE 1st in GrC, ITA 2nd and out
ENG-CZE
SPA-SVK

DEN scored!!!! 3-2
now CZE would nee RWO goals, 5' to go now,
We had 3 or 4 chances for 2-0....
biting my nails off

given yhe chance to choose, Id prefer to score 2-0 so we could eliminate Ger and meet Eng rather tgan Spain.
Of course 1-0 is fine as well, we could los it all by conceding (or if cze score 2)

With Cze 2 goals awy from messing things, Ger has no interst in equalising, Ita would like to score 2nd but it's more importnt to avoid conceding...
Den 4-2!!!!
Ita & Ger both can settle for this score...

It's over!
I wonder which the odds were for both these results to occur (ita W and Cze not)
We matched Ger, win not undeserved. How could we lose vs Cze tho :o (mind, after equalising we missed two sitters, before conceding two...)
Thanks Denmark!

Nice semis, with 4 top countries.
Berardi and Conti banned vs Spain, our whole right flank :?

Does show three groups is pretty unsatisfactory, semis become a bit of a lottery and teams "settle" for scores.

Well I didn't like the format either, but it always happened that teams settled for scores, even with more standard formats.
I of course recall all too well the infamous SWE-DEN 2-2 at Euro 2004, but there have been several other cases as well.

What I found particularly unfair, was that with only one runnerup progressing out of 3, and with each group playning in different days,
the first one to play had the disadvantage that those playing later knew exactly which score they needed to beat them.
That didn't prevent Portugal to fail what looked like an easy task, to beat Macedonia by 3 goals.
In general that's always the case with "non-binary" formats,
i.e. when you need a cross-group ranking to qualify a subset of the teams who got the same rank in their groups.
  • See e.g. in las Euro 2016 with Turkey launching a hate campaign on the media vs Italy, claiming we "destroyed" their right to qualify, by "settling" to lose vs Eire in last game once we had already secured group victory and Conte went for heavy rotation.
Having watched the game, I wouldn't say that Germany and Italy did "settle" for that score, that's only of course the claim of the Slovakian coach, understandably a sore loser stance, they'd been already lucky that Portugal didn't eliminate them the day before.
Despite the overhype they're getting from our press, I don't think this one is a great U21 italian side. For sure they showed a better pace, intensity and purpose vs Germany than in the previous two games, as we had the back to the wall, but still there was a lot of confusion and disorganisation in our game,
It can of course be said that once it emerged in the final minutes that the result suited each team, there was less propension and motivation to take risks to increase goals. But that has always been the case whenever formats and circumstances allowed for it.
Slovakia should rather blame Czechs for failing to beat Denmark, a result which would have not qualified Czechs but would have left Slovakia thru in most combinations (uness Italy won exactly 2-0 or Czechs won by 3)

3 groups to qualify 4 teams to semis is just as bad as 6 groups to qualifiy 16 teams to KO phase, as we had in last senior tournament.
I dread the mess that Infantino will bring to the WC final tournament opening it to 48 teams https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_FIFA ... Cup#Format just to harvest more political support from emerging (?) countries.
The tournament will open with a group stage consisting of 16 groups of three teams, with the top two teams progressing from each group to a knockout tournament starting with a round of 32 teams

...Another criticism of the new format is that
with 3-team groups, the risk of collusion between the two teams playing in the last round will increase compared with 4-team groups (where simultaneous kick-offs have been employed).
One suggestion by President Infantino is that group matches that end in draws will be decided by penalty shootouts.
more and more mess, and lottery...

with the new rules proposals also brought forth by Elleray at IFAB,

I figure football in 10 years would be a pale semblant of what we got used and grew up with. Time for me to settle in my dinosaur graveyard then

Germany are 6/4 favourites to win the semi-final, according to Oddschecker , with England priced at 9/4 and the draw through 90 minutes available at 12/5.

We're just a bunch of jaded social media stars, and Gagliardini desrved a yellow in 1st half too, but Spain aren't that much of a team, they're nothing special actually.
They got double the possession only to pass around the ball in their half, easy to up pass accuracy that way. And before conceding we had been more threatening.
So, we maybe didn't deserve to equalise, but there's at least some justice as Spain didn't deserve to lead, and doing it one man down is even greater satisdaction.

Then if in 10 defence is less tight and we leave in a normal shot from 30yds, it's just our fault. And Dollarumma is not that great gk after all, just a young prospect who'll need to improve a lot, still. I won't be sad if he leaves AC

Yes if you don't count Man City (2 goals), Tottenham and Arsenal as top teams.

My "reading" of this was that the Club wanted Lulu and Conte wanted someone else.

Also I go with the opinion that he touch etc isn't good enough from them: as they don't play a style that wants a pace and power CF.
