Can someone explain to me the faith being shown in Gabriel? Isn't he likely to drop out for Kos when he returns, or is he out long term?

Re: The 4.5 mill. defender thread 15/16
Kos is probably nailed on if fit, but he has had a number of niggles this season and Mertesacker has missed games recently becase he has been ill - and he isn't getting any quicker, which has been Arsenal's Achilles heel over the last year or so, contributed to by Arteta and Flamini's lack of pace.
When Gabriel has played (recently and historically) Arsenal have done better. The real danger is that Wenger might rotate him out of BPL games to keep him for European ones, particularly home games where the opposition are likely to set up for counter attack.

Re: The 4.5 mill. defender thread 15/16
Even when Kosc was fit, it was Mertersacker who was the one to miss out at his expense. I certainly wouldn't say he is totally nailed, but he seems to be at number two in the pecking order right now. Also worth noting that they are yet to concede in a game he has completed. I've just transferred him in.NoEyeDeer wrote:Can someone explain to me the faith being shown in Gabriel? Re: The 4.5 mill. defender thread 15/16
Gabriel should be ahead of Mertesacker now, but he will have that question mark over his head all season long. He has impressed, and I think he will end up being a very good player for us, but at the moment he looks like a bit of a liability at times. I reckon this is his bedding in season. There will be twists and turns, and that puts me off from an fpl perspective.
I'm not really seeing anything at 4.5, but good options at 5. It's a funny old season, but I think i will give up on the cheapies, and move towards Kolarov + 2 from 3x 5m, with a perma bench. Simpson, I'm looking at you.

Re: The 4.5 mill. defender thread 15/16
In one of the RMT threads I predicted that Gab and Kos would eventually become the number one partnership, though I wasn't expecting it to happen as early as it did due to BFG's injury. Gabriel has a lot of potential but hasn't been prem ready. The unexpected games he's had could well accelerate his move into the starting 11.NoEyeDeer wrote:Can someone explain to me the faith being shown in Gabriel? Can anyone shed any light on Danny Simpson ? Did he play just because De Laet was injured and did he pick up an injury himself as he went off early ?

Re: The 4.5 mill. defender thread 15/16
Allardyce named Sunderland manager. Brings Kaboul/Coates/O'Shea right back onto my radar as budget back up options (in place of Targett etc). With more pressing issues right now, it gives chance to see his preferred back 4 first before being able to make a move, too.

Re: The 4.5 mill. defender thread 15/16
It does indeed, once we see what his preferred lineup is. I think it might bring in a Targett replacement possibly? I think from my point of view with Aguero out I'll probably assume that I can stretch the extra 0.3 now and get Bertrand in over one of my 5.0s and will just stick with Whittaker as my random 4.5er whom I never expect to start.

Yep. Just edited my post to include Targett as you typed that. Will still stick to my plan of Kolarov, 5m, 5m to play most weeks, but with Francis/best 4.5 and Sunderland defender as back ups to give me a bit more of a bench.Mav3rick wrote:It does indeed, once we see what his preferred lineup is. Coates and Kaboul have been woeful. O'Shea is past his best but can still get a job done. Big Sam will probably looking at getting someone new in January. He could even sign Ron Vlaar now if he's recovered from injury, I think he's still available as a free agent, must be worth a punt. Adebayor is also free, huge punt but him and Defoe up front together are proven goal scorers, with Lens assisting them, nothing to lose really if they don't have cash to spend in january.

Whisper it quietly, but if Big Sam can impose any of his BIg Sam-ness onto them quickly, their fixtures are actually relatively half decent from a defensive point of view too...

Several reports suggesting that Gomez is out for the season, just in case anyone was still considering holding onto him.

Got to be a wait and see on that one. You'd think Moreno is the perfect full back for Klopp's old system.blahblah wrote:Luis Enrique? 4.3m......

Re: The 4.5 mill. defender thread 15/16
From what I've read, his system was narrow in midfield with the width provided by the full backs. Clyne and Moreno would be good in that role, but everything is guess work right now. I'll be switching Gomez for someone definite, and if Enrique does nail down a place, he can come in for Targett.blahblah wrote:Definitely a wait, I'm not going to -16, lol.

I've had a search but can't find anything about Enrique that sounds particularly positive. The only quotes I could find from him referenced the fact that he stayed at Liverpool for the money, which doesn't fill me with huge confidence that he can secure a starting place.
Having said that, it is a clean slate with a new manager so I guess anything could happen.

Re: The 4.5 mill. defender thread 15/16
Enrique is terrible and I've had him several times in my fantasy teams. He just isn't a great defender and not strong enough going forward. Him playing as a LW was quite the adventure a few years back.
Moreno will certainly win the starting job I would think.
